Collegiate Championship expanding to include collegiate teams and high school twirlers
USTA is pleased to announce that USTA’s popular Collegiate Championship is being expanded, to meet increased interest and demand from collegiate and high school twirlers, parents, and coaches!
Starting this season, college twirling lines or teams will be able to compete in two disciplines:
- Collegiate Spirit Twirling Team Event - a team competition designed to celebrate the spirit, pride, and traditions of collegiate band twirling programs. Teams perform an entertaining routine highlighting their pregame choreography and traditions, set to their institution’s pregame music and fight songs. Minimum three members. Time limit 2:30.
- Collegiate Half-Time Team Event - a team competition designed to showcase the creativity, entertainment value, and performance excellence of collegiate twirling programs. This event provides collegiate majorette lines, feature twirlers, and university-affiliated twirling clubs with the opportunity to present a competition version of the type of production they would traditionally perform during a football or basketball halftime show, or other performance within the college/university setting. Minimum three members. Time limit 3:00.
These events will be optional at local and state competitions, and if offered, can be either evaluative or competitive. They will be offered as competitive events at the regional and national levels.
In addition, individual high school twirlers will be able to compete in the new High School Championship!
- High School Championship - performed by any individual enrolled in grades 9-12. The athlete will use one or multiple batons to the high school fight song and musical selections of the athlete's choice. The high school twirling event should reflect the type of material utilized on the field by displaying worthwhile use of twirling to enhance the band, musicality, movement across the field/competition floor, and presentation to the audience for the purpose of entertaining communication. Time limit 2:30.
The High School Championship, along with the existing Collegiate Championship, will be offered at local and state competitions as either an evaluative or competitive event. They will be offered as competitive events at the regional and national levels.
Detailed information about all four of these events, including music requirements, competition rules, penalties, judging criteria, and tabulation will be available in the USTA Rule Book, which will be posted soon to the USTA Member Portal (opens in new tab) under Documents. USTA is also developing a Collegiate and High School Championships handbook, that athletes can share with their twirling coordinator, band director, etc.
USTA is looking forward to seeing more scholastic twirlers demonstrating their twirling skills and school spirit on the competition floor this season!
